What is Audiometry Testing?
Audiometry testing is a non-invasive procedure that measures a person’s ability to hear different sounds, pitches, and frequencies. This test is essential for diagnosing various types of hearing loss, whether due to age, noise exposure, illness, or other factors. The test typically involves wearing headphones and responding to sounds at different volumes and frequencies to determine the softest sounds a person can hear across a range of pitches.
Types of Audiometry Tests
Pure Tone Audiometry: This is the most common type of audiometry test. It measures the hearing threshold for pure tones at different frequencies. The results are plotted on an audiogram, which helps in identifying the degree and type of hearing loss.
Speech Audiometry: This test evaluates the ability to hear and understand speech. It involves listening to and repeating words at different volumes, which helps in determining speech recognition and discrimination capabilities.
Tympanometry: Although not a hearing test, tympanometry is often included in audiometry testing to assess the function of the middle ear. It helps identify issues like fluid in the ear or eardrum perforations.
